Heeley City Farm

We had a great day at the Spring Fayre yesterday down at Heeley City Farm.  A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by and donated to the British Red Cross.  We have raised nearly £750 so far, only around £250 to go!

Our stand was set up over by the tiny lambs, which entertained us greatly throughout the day.  We were also so fortunate as to be set up down wind of the lavendar stall, which meant it smelled gorgeous too.  There was a great turn-out at the Spring Fayre and the other stalls and the entertainment groups were great!  We particulary enjoyed the music and dancing performed by the Boggart's Breakfast Border Morris group (I will post a video up in a little bit).

We had a surprise visit from Nick Robinson (the professional origami artist) who was also at the Spring Fayre.  We were treated to an inpromptu origami demonstration (which accounts for the + 1 Dragon and +1 Standing Bird in our totals) and he even posted about us on his blog.  While he was chatting with us, he was also so very kind and signed a copy of one of his books that our friend left with us, since she was not able to be there yesterday.  :)

We have started to realise that after this initiative is over and we have reached out goal, we will be in possession of a large number of origami cranes.  A lot of people have donated to the British Red Cross through our cause, but have decided not to take a crane home (or only took one, when they donated much more than £1.00).  Given this, we would like to do something special with the few hundred cranes that we will have left at the end...  therefore, if you have any suggestions, we would love to hear them.  You can let us know your ideas by posting in the comments section or sending us an e-mail (or finding us on Twitter or even posting on our Facebook page)!

Heeley City Farm Spring Fayre

Apologies, apologies, apologies for the lapse in updates since before the weekend, it has been a very busy week (as you can see by our sad number of cranes produced).  However, we have raised more than 70% of our goal... we almost have £1000 for The British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal!  And you will notice that the crane 'deficit' numbers are slowly rising (or lowering, whichever is correct in this context).

In an effort to raise the £287.55 we still need to reach our goal we will be hosting a stand/table at the upcoming Heeley City Farm Spring Fayre on Saturday, April 2nd (yes, that is this Saturday) from 11:00am until 4:00pm.  Are you excited?

If you are in the Sheffield area (or feel like going for a drive, or for a sail, or for a flight, or for a... etc) then why not stop by to see us?  You can make a donation and take home a crane made by us, or we can teach you (and your family and friends) how to make your own origami crane, or if you already know how to do origami you can help us to make the 304 (and 9/20) origami cranes we have yet to make before reaching the 1000 goal (senbazuru); as I am sure we will reach £1000 before too long.

We will even have handout instructions for you to take home, so you can continue your origami skills at home (and for an additional donation, why not take some origami paper home with you to practice).  If you are not in the Sheffield area, or if you cannot make this wonderful event (there will be many baby animals there, as it is Spring, need I say more) you can still help us out, by spreading the word!

There will be a great many things to see and do, aside from making origami cranes and helping us raise money.  For more details, you can see their poster here or you can send us an e-mail.  :)

Have you ever wondered what a few hundred origami cranes would look like?

I thought that I would take the opportunity tonight to take a few photographs of our efforts.  This photo is of a few hundred cranes we have made over the last week and a half - it does not include the few hundred that are already hanging in the window or about the hundred that we have already given away in exchange for donations.

We would really appreciate it if you could help us to spread the word of what we are trying to achieve, as we only have about £300.00 more to go!  You can see the rest of our pictures, by visiting our Flickr page.

I know that Yuko has given away some cranes, raised some money, and made even more cranes.  I will include both the donations and the origami cranes in the running totals tomorrow, once we have it all in hand; however, but I believe it is around £60.00, which would put us nearly 70% of the way to our goal!

We have actually made more than 500 origami cranes, but we have kept some back from the total so that we can give them away to people who make £1 donations in person at events/work/etc - so we'll make up the 31 and 7/20 from the deficit tomorrow evening.  :D

Worldwide Support for Japan

I just wanted to take a few moments to recognise the sentiments of support we have received from all over the world.  We have received donations not only from individuals from within the UK, but also Ireland, Spain, Canada, America, and more!  If you keep them coming in, then we'll keep on making origami cranes...  help us reach that goal of £1000!

We have also had a great response in the form of positive messages, via e-mail, telephone, tweets, comments, wall posts, etc.  There are individuals across our city, the country, and even other countries who are offering their help by spreading the word, folding origami cranes, and collecting donations.  We have even 'inspired' some others to begin similar fundraising efforts in their areas for their local Red Cross organisations.  I will post links to their sites, once they are up and running!

I wanted, also, to take a moment to especially thank the local stationary stores that have helped us out with contributions of, or discounts on, origami paper: WH Smith (Fargate and Meadowhall branches), Hobbycraft (Sheffield branch), and Carsons Stationary & Print.  We also had a great donation of absolutely beautiful paper from a friend.  We, literally, wouldn't have been able to do this without their support - so if you have some time please send them your thanks too!

There are a lot of great fundraising efforts happening all over the world and a few that have stood out for me are the impromptu concerts in London by violinist Taro Hakase and efforts to start raising money for the rebuiling of the most affected areas in Japan after the immediate rescue and recovery has ended by Play for Japan.  If you have a few moments to spare, take some time to check out their websites and what they have to say.

I am unsure if I will be posting our running totals over the weekend as I am away, and while I will have internet and mobile access through my phone, I am not sure that I will be able to get it all done.  But either way, I will be keeping track and it will all be updated for sure on Monday!  We will all be making more cranes during our spare time and hopefully that deficit will turn into a surplus by Sunday night.

Oh, and are you enjoying our new style blog, with full social networking accounts integration?  I am learning fast!

Good Friends and Good Food

This evening the three of us (myself, Yuko, and Fionnuala) met up to have a meal and to work on our origami cranes.  Yuko made a wonderful Japanese meal for us, fried tofu, aubergine, green beans with sesame seeds, and udon (I will have to get her to remind me how you say it all in Japanese again)!  Oh and we had some beautiful green tea, that she had sent to her from home.  Yum!

We then set to making some more origami cranes and stringing the ones that were made yesterday so they could be displayed with the others in our window.  After making a (small) amount (by our new standards) we went off to St. Thomas' Church in Crookes, Sheffield where some friends of ours from the University were meeting up with a lot of other people for a get together.  They kindly welcomed us in to hear about our initiative for the British Red Cross.

In total they donated £57.25, but all told only asked for 30 cranes (some people took pre-made ones, others learned to make their own, and some people just took some origami paper to try at home)!  We really must bring some instruction sheets with us to our next outing, as everyone was really keen to learn about how they are made.  :)

Given our time out of the house we have fallen a bit behind on our crane numbers (I am calling this a 'crane deficit'.) but I think that you will all understand our position - it is only because you are all so good to us and have donated so much so quickly!  We will all work very hard during the rest of the week and over the weekend (I have a lot of long car journeys, so I have a feeling I can get quite a few done) in order to bring our numbers up (When we get to this stage, I shall be calling it a 'crane surplus').

Once we were at home, I hung up the strings with the cranes from yesterday.  I will post some pictures up tomorrow for everyone to see.  Thank you everyone for your support so far.  We have had a great response and tomorrow I will take some time to mention the things people have said and the gestures of support we have received from other people.

Goodnight!

Unfolded Wings

The 80 origami cranes we made today will sit with their wings unfolded until tomorrow, when we will hang them up to fly with the others.  And hopefully along with any others we make tomorrow (a quick check shows that we will be making at least 20 tomorrow).

We may be starting the next stage in our 'campaign' (What is the correct word here?) tomorrow, where we teach others to make an origami crane for a small donation to our cause (suggested donation will be £1) - you would then be able to either take your origami crane home with you or send it home with us to display with the others.  You could even write you name on it, if you wanted!  We will let you know future locations for this expanded effort, that will be open to the public so you can come and try your hand at origami.

We are also thinking about giving people origami cranes in exchange for a small donation to our cause (again suggested donation will be £1), once we begin to create a surplus!  We will update you on details on where you can find us, likely after the weekend (when we will hopefully have the time to go origami-mad).

It takes quite a bit of time to make these large quantities of origami cranes in a day, but once you get into routine it gets easier and easier.  However, I think I am developing 'origami thumb'!  Only two days in and I think there is a callous developing...

Welcome to our Blog!

Hello,

We began our fundraising efforts yesterday; in an attempt to raise £1000 for the British Red Cross - Japan Tsunami Appeal we said that we would make one orgami paper crane for every £1 donated, either through our Just Giving page or in person.

We definitely hit the ground running and we made one paper crane for every £1 that was donated yesterday before we went home...  for a total of 51 paper cranes!  :)

These paper cranes are currently hung in our living room window, so that everyone who walks past our house can see them.  I will post some pictures up later, for those of you who do not live in the area.

We are only part way through the second day and we have raised another £50.  A massive thank you to everyone who has donated so far (and thank you again to WHSmith Sheffield Fargate store and Carlsons Stationary & Print in Sheffield for helping us out with enough origami paper for the first 300 cranes).

For the sake of our sanity, I think we will need to work on a working day/waking day basis.  For example:  If we raise £50 before 17:30 when we go home, then we will attempt to make 50 paper cranes before the end of that day.  However, please forgive us if we fall a little behind, there are only three of us and we all have day jobs!

I will try to keep everyone updated on our progress, but for more information here are some useful links, in the meantime:
